Red Velvet Cake

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 bottle red food coloring
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon butter flavoring

In large mixing bowl, cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to creamed mixture. Sift flour with salt and add, alternating with buttermilk to creamed mixture. Combing baking soda with vinegar and add to batter.  Stir in vanilla and butter flavoring. Pour batter in to 3 greased and floured 9-inch round baking pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Cool layers on racks. Frost cake.
