Applesauce Brownies

1 ½ cups of sugar

½ cup shortening

½ tsp. cinnamon

2 Tbl. cocoa

2 cups sweetened applesauce

2 eggs, beaten

2 cups flour

1 ½ tsp. baking soda

½ tsp. salt 

Cream together the sugar and shortening in mixer bowl.  Add the rest of ingredients and combine thoroughly.  Pour onto a greased 10x15” jelly roll pan.

TOPPING

2 Tbl. white sugar (put into a salt shaker for even spreading)

½ cup chopped English walnuts

1 6-oz. pkg. chocolate chips

Sprinkle over batter.  Bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees.  Cool in pan.

This recipe was always a favorite of our children and their friends.  It can be put together very quickly and serves a lot of people.  It transports easily and doesn’t need to be refrigerated.
